Which
kitchen island size best suits you
From moveable cutting and serving tables to installed
free standing cabinets with a full complement of storage and workspace
options, kitchen island sizes vary considerably. According to a recent
survey, nearly 80 percent of all home buyers consider a kitchen island
an essential part of the kitchen. However, choosing the correct size
island for your home can be a challenge.
Interior designers focus on the gravitational pull of the kitchen island
and to how it becomes the focus of the design and the activity in the
kitchen. Accomplishing this concept in your own kitchen can involve some
careful planning.
You may want to consider adding wheels to your design. Large kitchen
islands can serve to separate rooms commonly found in open home design
today. The islands can help to direct traffic flow, convert eating and
cooking space into more useful spaces between meals, keep the cook and
guests together yet apart and compliment the other design concepts of
the room.
Larger islands are especially useful in kitchen with large floor plans
or in kitchens with odd shaped layouts. You can also use large islands
to break up open space eating areas in apartments and condos.
If your current kitchen has limited space, or if it has a floor plan and
traffic pattern that limits the work area, you could benefit greatly by
choosing a small island for the kitchen. Often, an island is the best
way to achieve the highly desirable workspace triangle between the
refrigerator, stove and sink.
In small apartments or condos, you could use small islands to add extra
work space. It is often the case in these situations that a large island
wouldn’t fit, but two small islands can provide some versatility. A cart
or island with wheels can add even more versatility to a small island.
The size of the kitchen island will raise some questions about the
features that you want in your island. Large islands offer the advantage
of space and can be equipped with bar sinks, deep fryers, serving
shelves, cabinets and drawers, utensil and towel racks, small
refrigerators, wine racks and beverage services or several other
options. The smaller islands and carts will obviously offer a more
limited variety of selections.
